A New World
It was March 11th, 2020 and we were watching the news crash in, the stats rise and the uncertainty in our hearts build. One thing was becoming clear—this was a new reality, everything was about to be very different.
By that evening, we knew it for certain. We’d have to stay home for the foreseeable future—and we'd do it to the best of our ability, to protect our family, our friends, and our community at large from the rampant and indiscriminate spread of COVID-19.
We stayed up all night, thinking about everything that would now stop. Schools for sure and who knew when they would reopen. All social and elective engagements. Reduced trips for food and medicine. No contact with our extended family. The list went on. What would continue, though, were the passing days. The calendar would continue to rotate and that was good. If we could flatten the curve, lowering the severity of the all-at-once impact on our hospital resources, spreading out the days to give more time for the development of a vaccine or treatment, this virus might be manageable and more of us may survive it.
I'm a real estate agent and my business was on pause. My wife, was a teacher—also home, and my sister was a tourism magazine editor + publisher with a journalism and branding background—also basically grounded. So we decided to join forces and put extra focus on solving the birthday conundrum. Our kids would soon be celebrating their 6th (x2), 4th and 1st trips around the sun and their parties had all been cancelled, so we decided to get creative, testing various ways for our kids to socialize with their friends. Some ideas worked well and others tanked—but out of it all grew a real idea...a great idea: we'd develop a community initiative that would let us all celebrate our special milestones in an easy and responsible way, meeting the needs of the world today while having the most fun ever:
Welcome to www.TheBirthdayPortal.com
"Let’s just take it online," we thought, "let's gather all the ingredients for the best birthday in one place and execute it from home." So we made ‘The Birthday Portal’ —an online interactive forum where our birthday people can celebrate and be celebrated in the most amazing ways.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Best birthday wishes,
Brett, Yael + Lonelle
